D*ck In A Box

The funny thing is, I should replace that * with an “o” instead of the “i” that you were expecting.  But let me take it back a little bit.  This weekend was my friend Nik’s bachelor party.  We headed to Barrie, Ontario to get in some golfing and do some drinking.  Mission accomplished on both fronts!  The golfing was cool because this was the first time I used a cart that had the built in GPS.  So, as long as you park your cart reasonably close to your ball, you get a pretty good idea of the yardage to the green.  It also warns you of certain hazards and shows you the carry distance you need on some holes.  Cool stuff!  Too bad I suck donkey balls at golf.  My drives were right on this day and I was hitting my some pretty tight spots.  The problem was that my approaches and putting were absolute crap.  Oh well - the key was that we had a great time and drank some beers.  At night we went out and got pretty drunk.  Nothing new there, to any of the regular readers of this blog.  The funniest part of the whole weekend had to be on the ride home.  3 of us in the car were chatting away when I interrupted the conversation in order to point out a sign.  The sign apparently made mention to this being the exit for “Dock in a Box”!!!  Seriously?  DOCK in a Box.  That is waaaaay too close to Dick in a Box not to be made fun of.  At first I thought this was a hangover day dream, a mirage that my childish mind created.  Sure enough, we passed the legitimate business named Dock in a Box later.  Now, it appears this is actually a good company with a good product….but…still….the name…

I just can’t get over the name!  Would your friends ever take me seriously if I was sending emails as mike@dockinabox.com?  Probably not!  In case you live under a rock and don’t understand why this is so funny….

Awesome Old Spice Ads

Old Spice used to have a crappy rep amongst young people.  Look at the name…it says it’s old!  Not exactly trendy.  You aren’t running out to buy an Oldsmobile are you?  I didn’t think so.  I guess they realized that they were working against a bad image written right into their name.  How do you deal with that?  By coming out with some of the most awesome commercials ever made!  By now you all must have seen these things.  What is amazing is that they have worked perfectly.  When I see Old Spice in the aisles I don’t think about something my dad would use.  I think about those wicked ads and how cool they are.  I guess advertising works!

You may not have seen the above video before.  A lot of people aren’t aware that they actually went with this idea a short while back. This didn’t get quite as much play, but was just as awesome.  The below is the video that everyone knows about.  Well done Old Spice for having the balls to allow your advertising company to run with this idea!

The Real Optimus Prime

So, after working a solid chunk of the weekend I took some time for myself today.  I watched the Transformers movie.  No, not the recent ones that you are probably thinking about.  I am talking about the old school animated version.  The REAL version.  Here is one of the greatest scenes of any move of all time.  This is what made Optimus Prime so awesome.  He wasn’t a bumbling robot tripping on shit in someones back yard trying to hide from their parents.  He was a stand up, bad ass who whooped the crap out of bad guys…and even showed mercy.

By the way, that song - Stan Bush singing Touch. That song would have been forgotten by now if it wasn’t the anthem for Optimus Prime kicking Megatron’s ass. Here is the video…

Jacket Off

OK, I have been dying over this for quite a few days.  As soon as I watched the new Karate Kid trailer, I thought something was wrong.  SOMETHING IS WRONG!  Who the hell thought it was a good idea for Jackie Chan to tell a little kid “jacket off” repeatedly?  Was this a fucking joke?  I hope so…because it is a good one!  If not, then someone better get fired for not being aware of the joke.  Here is a nice little edit of the trailer…

After laughing for about 5 days straight, I then started thinking about the actual movie. I am a little pissed off that they are redoing the Karate Kid…and making it about Kung-Fu?! All the Asian cultures are the same anyways, right? Dumb! After I stopped being angry about that I started to think about the original movies. There was a song from the second movie that popped into my head. In fact, I sang it with a coworker one morning when we were discussing this movie. You have to remember this song!

Alright, that’s enough randomness for a Saturday.  Get out there and enjoy your weekend!

Crazy Long Weekend

Holy crap, this was one insanely busy long weekend.  Let me start by saying that my work project that would normally keep me busy on Friday night and Saturday afternoon was cancelled!  I am anxious to get that project completed, but I wasn’t going to argue with getting a full long weekend away from work.  It all began with some drinks with coworkers.  Our goal was the enjoy the really nice weather, unfortunately the weather turned a little bit shortly after we got to a patio.  No matter, we took the party inside.  We then went to a friends house and continued to drink and play random old school music videos on YouTube.  What was my first pick?  I will let you see for yourself…

Awesome!  I passed out there, and managed to head home at a reasonable hour on Saturday morning.  Drinking that night wasn’t completely ideal as I had already promised my buddy Mark that I would go out with him Saturday night.  Things worked out well as he was feeling lazy too.  So, I just booted up to his farm (yeah, he lives on a farm) and we proceeded to barbecue and drink beers until we couldn’t see straight.  We also popped in our favourite movie: Team America - World Police.  Here is my favourite scene that we watched about 12 times…

Bahahahaha!!!  This is amazing.  It goes from funny to kinda dragging on and then back to being funny.  Such a rare feat.  Anyways, we polished off about 30 beers between us and passed out fairly early.  I was up at 8am the next morning, enjoying a nice morning on the farm.  No real time to rest.  Sunday was my golfing day!  I made my way home later in the morning and hit the driving range.  It was pretty much as I expected - I was spraying my shots all over the place.  My performance on the golf course wasn’t much better.  I shot a 109, which is my highest score in a couple years.  I was helped by three 8’s I put up on some par 4’s….playing in the bunker is not where you want to spend your first round of the year!  It wasn’t all bad on the course.  The beer cart girl complimented my eyes and told me I was very good looking.  That was just the boost I needed to get me through a bad round.  Thank you random beer cart girl!  I was so caught off guard by her continued compliments that I really didn’t know how to react.  I just said “Thanks…ummm…can I get a Coors Light please?”  Someone much cooler would have been able to say something charming and witty.  I got beer.  Hmmmmm.  Yeah, I think it still worked out for me.  After my monstrous score, I headed home to eat some food with the intention of regrouping for a night out.  It wasn’t happening.  My 32 year old body was done.  I passed out really early after rediscovering the love of my own bed.  Falling asleep early means waking up early.  So I was bored and looking for something to do at 8am on the holiday Monday morning.  Thankfully my buddy Gar is usually up at a reasonable time.  We decided to go do some roller blading down by the lakeshore in Toronto.  It was very busy as everyone was out enjoying the amazing weather.  That would normally have been the end of my adventures.  Today, it was only the start.  At the last minute I got the opportunity to go to the Ontario Science Centre to see the Harry Potter Exhibit! Oh yeah, I had to be a part of that.  The exhibit was pretty good actually!  When it comes to special exhibits, I always enjoy the show the Science Centre puts on.  I have also gone there to see Body Worlds and Titanic.  The actual general admission content is not so good.  So much of it seems like it was there back when I was in elementary school…and that was 2 decades ago!!!  C’mon guys, it’s time to modernize the joint!  Most people there had more technology in their pockets than that place had in all it’s displays.  My friend Naomi was not a big fan of Harry Potter, but she was nice enough to suggest we see this today.  We did get into a Science vs Magic competition.  Magic won 8-5.  Don’t ask me to rationalize the judging on that…you had to be there.  Just trust me on the final score.  We couldn’t resist capping off the afternoon with a beer on a patio.  The day was far too amazing to not enjoy a little bit more sunshine.

With all of that done, I finally got home and had time to write this post.  I now need 3 days off to recover from my 3 days off.  I think 4 days of work will actually feel like a nice little break for me.  That will last right up until next week.  What happens then?  A Southampton adventure!  As I always, I will keep you posted.

Mike Comrie and Hilary Duff Engagement

These pics have been making there way around the interwebs recently.  It isn’t unusual to catch celebrity couples around town.  Sometimes, these shots catch someone wearing a new engagement ring.  It is rare to actually catch the moment when a celebrity couple gets engaged.  That’s exactly what happened recently for NHL hockey player Mike Comrie and superstar Hilary Duff.  We really get to see the three major points of this event.  Let’s run through the play by play…

The Moment:  This is where all preparation and training pay off.  Mike gets down on one knee and asks Hilary Duff to marry him.  Mike is a pro athlete, so he isn’t afraid to get down and dirty (neither is Hilary, as you will soon see).  His old school approach seems to work as Hilary looks pretty excited.

The Brag:  Success!  She definitely said yes.  It certainly helped Mike’s cause that he was able to afford a million dollar ring to put on her finger.  Now this is where Hilary gets into the play.  She has been waiting for this moment for a long time.  Now she has to show off to her crowd of family and friends by taking a pic of the ring and texting it over to everyone.

The Reward:  When Mike scored a big goal in hockey, he had the crowd rise to it’s feet and the coach would give him a pat on the back.  Call me crazy, I think this reward might be a little better.  Hilary proves she isn’t afraid to get down and dirty (told you!) as she rewards Mike for his solid play.  Judging by Mike’s expression, he couldn’t be happier with the result!

2010 Super Bowl Ads

Congrats to the New Orleans Saints for beating up on the Colts and taking their first Super Bowl!  This is definitely a sports feel good story considering everything that team and city have gone through.  The big game is more than just a sporting event though.  It is a media machine.  A 30 second ad during the game will run you over 2.6 million dollars!  So, your ass better be serious about what you are presenting.  Here is a viewer from Forbes that has a bunch of the ads from last night.  Enjoy!

Cool Guys Don’t Look At Explosions

This was a song from the MTV Movie Awards.  It’s funny because it is something I always laughed at.  In action movies, the hero always walks away from these massive explosions without even looking back.  Seems a little dangerous to me.  I guess that’s why I am not an action hero.

WTF Is The Rock Doing?

I just saw a trailer that made me throw up a little bit.  It is for a movie about the freaking Tooth Fairy.  This is the classic crappy movie cookie cutter.  Have some dude who is ultra manly, a hockey player in this case, get some unlikely mystical career that he bumbles through but ends up developing a knack for.  In the end everyone’s lives are enriched.  I puke.  The end.  What makes me sad is that this is where Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has taken his acting career.  This guy did some awesome action movies, but also had a talent for comedy.  He played a gay body guard opposite Vince Vaughn and John Travolta in Be Cool.  That is something to build on!!!  He then did a dramatic role in Gridiron Gang.  An awesome movie!  That should have surely lead to more chances at doing serious roles.  WTF is he doing?  Here is a little sample of his movie progression.  The last one will make you gag.

Christmas Specials You Have To Watch

It is December so I figure ’tis the season to start talking about Christmas.  I wont get into talking about shopping or decorations or any of that crap.  I want to get straight to the entertainment.  I have posted this list before, but I was reminded of it recently.  I watched Love Actually on Monday night and it got me thinking of all the Christmas specials I make sure to see at this time of year.  You may see a lot of other articles on the net about this in the coming days. But, my list has one huge difference: it’s from me. My opinion on everything is clearly far superior. You will see listed here some of the movies and specials that don’t get mentioned anywhere else. Just follow my list and enjoy a Christmas filled with awesomeness!

Best Animated Christmas Specials:

  • Bugs Bunny’s Christmas Carol - This is a great, albeit short, version of the classic. You have Yosemite Sam playing the Scrooge…how can you go wrong?!
  • Mickey’s Christmas Carol - Although this is animated, it is very true to the original tale. It even gets pretty sad when Scrooge McDuck is spending time with the Ghost of Christmas Future. All the usual characters from the cartoons make appearances.
  • Garfield’s Christmas - This is a surprising pick, I know. It has everything you need wrapped into an entertaining half hour. The fat orange cat even manages to show some Christmas spirit without losing his personality.
  • Futurama Christmas Episodes - I know, the list just got a little weird. But, if you happen to be a cartoon loving geek then this is for you. In the future, Santa is a robot with a programming malfunction that forces him to judge everyone naughty…and try to kill them. It makes for an interesting Christmas. This is great for those who both love and hate this time of year!

Best Non-Animated Christmas Specials:

  • A Christmas Story - You had to know this was making the list! Every guy can think back to when he was young and all he really wanted for Christmas was a weapon? This is a great story, done with a retro look. It’s almost like watching “The Wonder Years” but not as stupid.
  • Elf - Any movie that stars Will Ferrell is great any time of the year, including the holidays. But you have something truly special when Ferrell stars as an human raised by elves and set loose in New York. It has all the sentiment of Christmas with all the fun of Will Ferrel, a perfect combination.
  • Love Actually - Stop laughing you heartless jack-asses! This is an awesome movie, especially around Christmas. A series of intertwined characters and mini stories that all come together around Christmas time. This is perfect! Guys can win some extra points by watching this with your girl….just don’t let her see you cry.
  • The Family Man - This is another movie that doubles as a chick-flick. But, this is a great holiday story for everyone. Nicolas Cage stars as a rich ass who gets the chance to look back on how life could have been. It all happens around Christmas time and makes you feel good…then sad…then good again.

That is the end of the list. Of course there may be some I didn’t list. Feel free to watch them, although I will not be held responsible if their lack of awesomeness ruins your Christmas. Why didn’t I include Rudolph? Because he sucks, that’s why! That whiny little red nosed twit should have been shot and eaten by Santa.
