New Desk

New Desk

My new desk is ready to go!  I  did something very much outside of my character today.  I went to IKEA.  On a weekend!     To me, that is on par with suicide.  So many college kids expressing their individuality with the worlds most popular furniture items.  But I was desperate.  I needed a new desk…badly!  My old desk was getting the job done but it just wasn’t big enough for the laptop to go along with the two 24 inch wide screen monitors.  Having worked in IT for many years, I got very used to luxurious amounts of screen real estate.  So, here is my old setup… And here is the new command center… There are a few things I am going to have to figure out though.  What do I do with my old Mac Mini?  I could keep it hooked up to the monitors...

Goodbye Questrade, Hello Interactive Brokers!

Goodbye Questrade, Hello Interactive Brokers!

As you know by my complete lack of posting, I haven’t been doing any trading lately.  Some of that is because of the summer and I tend to spend my days either working, drinking or hungover.  Mostly, it is because I finally accepted that things were not going to work with Questrade.  I FINALLY ended that relationship and made the move to IB.  My main requirement is hit by staying with a broker registered in Canada because of our 1 Million dollar insurance on accounts.  I like that security.  Here is how I see things…  Questrade: Man, I really wanted to like this company!  I am looking back at this breakup with a positive view.  This was my first experience with an equities broker so I will always have a place in my heart for them.  Opening the account...

Back in the Big Time – 1st DDoS Attack

Back in the Big Time – 1st DDoS Attack

Ah, the joys of having a blog.  It has been over 6 years since I had the first version of this website.  Blogging is fun but it comes with some serious pains in the ass!  The bigger and more viewed your site becomes, the bigger target you have on your back.  You know you’ve hit the big time (in the fantasy land of the interwebs) when one or all of the below happen to your site. Your site gets hacked You get super random legal sounding letters threatening to sue you You generate a ton of advertising revenue Now, in the previous iteration of this website, I generated about $100 a month in ad revenue.  Not big time, but I was pretty proud of myself.  I did used to get a ton of emails threatening me for one reason or another.  I had someone mad that I linked a...

Mar 9, 2015 – Network Upgrade

Today wasn’t going to be a trading day.  Sunday started with some breakfast and drinks at my place and ended at one of my favourite local pubs.  The end result was a solid hangover to start the day.  I could have popped in on things for the end of day, but why ruin a perfectly good lazy day. Today was an eventful day for Apple.  They released info on the new Watch as well as a new MacBook.  Both look pretty cool, although I’m not likely to buy the Watch.  I just don’t have a need for one.  Who knows though, I did say the same thing about an iPad and now I can’t live without that. Speaking of Apple, I did get a new toy from them that went into my home network setup.  I grabbed a 2TB Time Capsule like this…   This device is not...

My Trading Desk

My Trading Desk

I promised to explain my trading setup, so here it is.  I do intend to make some changes within the next year or so, but I’ll explain the reasons for that as I go.  Currently, this is what I have.  This is, considering my geek background, a very simple setup with some relatively old hardware.  I’m sure a lot of new traders will want to plunk down some good money on state of the art hardware.  That really isn’t necessary.  Learn your craft and wait to experience the actual limits of your setup before you invest in new gear.  Put that extra money in your trading account.  With this setup, I am able to fully monitor 6 stocks including charts, level 2, time & sales as well as my order window.  At this point in my skill development, that is more...
