I was that guy. You know him. The guy that had that video game system before everyone. Yup, that was me! Had most of them. And, I played some great games on those systems. I just wanted to share with you the games that I felt defined a system.
Atari 2600
best game: Pitfall

This game was the greatest action/adventure game…at the time. All you did was move your little block…umm…I mean character from left to right across one screen at a time that had an obstacle. These obstacles could have been barrels, scorpions, alligators and even more alligators. The “graphics” were very good and the game actually sucked me in for a solid year with its endless supply of obstacles.
NES
Best Game: Super Mario 3

Of course I had to say that. The gameplay, graphics and story make this a game you could honestly jump into today and still be entertained. This might just be the most popular game on any system of all time! Honorable mention to Blades of Steel - the hockey game that talked. It seems “makes the pass” was all it could every say, but it was huge for me at the time!
Super Nintendo
Best Game: MarioKart

This has to be the top party game on any system. I still know some people that throw down the xbox controllers to fire up the SNES for a round of MarioKart. Slick graphics and easy controls made it possible for anyone to jump into this game. Even hardcore gamers would sit there and laugh themselves silly while playing this!
Sega Genesis
Best Game: Technocop

I know, I know. Everyone is screaming about Sonic. Sonic was annoying. He was a stupid rodent who needed to be shot. Technocop was badass! This character was actually able to shoot innocent people and make their bodies explode into a bloody mess, complete with twitching arms separated from their bodies! Oh yeah, we didn’t see this level of gore for a solid 10 years after this! Honorable mention to NHL ‘93, it allowed you to bloody people on the ice and knock them out of games.
N64
Best Game: Goldeneye 007

This game took first person shooters on consoles to new levels. The finesse and polish of this game set the bar high for years to come. You couldn’t just run into a room blasting. You actually had to use some stealth. Getting to zoom in with a sniper rifle is a satisfaction I hadn’t experienced until this game. It even added a split screen multi-player experience if you had up to 4 controllers! I actually remember not going out to the bar one night to play this game.
Playstation
Best Game: Resident Evil

I was actually scared to play this game alone. I will admit it. I used to call a friend and we would both play while staying on the phone just so we weren’t alone. This game brought the cinematic possibilities of games to the forefront. It gave a chilling storyline, that developed as the game played out. It also forced weird camera angels on you so that you could never see around a corner. This gave you the full horror movie experience.
Playstation 2
Best Game: Grand Theft Auto 3

This is the game. If I could only have one game from my past and be forced to play it for the rest of my life, this would be it. The size of the open city. The ability to roam around and just cause trouble if you dont feel like following the missions. The fact that you can drag someone out of their car and beat them to death with a baseball bat. All videogame goodness that broke new ground. Rockstar took a lot of heat for releasing this game. Why? Because nobody ever killed anyone in the history of the earth until this game was made.
Xbox
Best Game: Halo

Halo was the best first person shooter created at the time. The game also sold a ton of units. It was proof that a strong game can shut people up and make them buy your game system. I know, because that is what it did for me. The multi-player game added so much value to this title. Being able to play as two teams of 4 on separate tv’s (via the system link cable) meant this game was designed to last. Halo2 sold more units, but wasn’t nearly as good. The ending went nowhere and you played most of the game in the dark. Multi-player did add the option to use Xbox live’s online service though. But, I still feel Halo was the stronger game.
That wraps up my post on this subject. I am not going to get into Xbox360 and PS3 because games are still being cranked out for those systems, and I have no idea what will game will become my favorite. I also didn’t cover the handheld systems because I can just say this: Gameboy. Tetris. Done! And, I also didn’t cover NeoGeo, TurboGraphix16 or Dreamcast because they sucked. Feel free to argue with me on my choices
